Concerning late 15th/early 16th c. sallets

Most sallets of the period have turned edges. Some surviving helmets have unfinished edges suggesting that they were cut-down to make them more compact or to prepare them for applied non-ferrous edging. I think I've even seen unfinished but flared edges.

Were helmet edges ever left unturned by the armourer--either left flat or beveled with a file?
