I think this topic has been humorously yet tastfully handled. I tried to find a pic with more detail on Kate blanchets rapier but there is none so far. It has a simple but very cool chisled hilt. I was excited about a fencing character in the new Indiana Jones movie. The pic with her rapier out and pointed at someones throat was too large to go in here. Was my heading hormonally crazed? I thought I was merely being amusing. I put another pic up earlier of a movie warrior woman. The lady persian from "Last Legion" She had the best fight scenes and the most interesting gear.
I dont think this thread has been as jejune and tasteless as say any comic fanzine you might leaf thru. And this is an "off topic" selection. I think our silliness has been harmless and inoffensive. Women with swords are certainly an archetypal image though admittidly it isnt often handled very well and is most often done with an exploitive bent instead of an inspirational one. I shall be more respectfull in the future.
Now here is a great pic of Sven Ole Thor-Son from Gladiator. He was the only character that interested me in the whole thing. (Except Oliver Reed of course!)

I'm not looking for debate, which is counter to our rules anyway. This thread was in danger of becoming juvenile and something needed to be said.
Pictures of actresses with swords are okay, teenage boy-esque commentary on them is not.
The Off-Topic Talk forum is not a free for all forum. Everything posted here is supposed to have something to do with the study and appreciation of historic arms and armour and their replicas.
This site is watched by academics and museum folks. We want them to participate. Silliness and juvenile behavior don't encourage that to happen.

I'm assuming the props for this movie was made by Weta Workshop, who tend to take some liberties with historical designs when making their fantasy swords. (Recall that they did the props for the Lord of The RIngs trilogy as well.) This one looks kinda like an evolution of the swords used in the first movie, with a more slender blade and a complex hilt.
Of course, experience has taught me to never trust movie posters. They tend to be heavily manipulated, sometimes even to the point of actually replacing the movie prop with an entirely different sword which never shows up in the film. So you never know for sure. |
You assume right. I made Caspian's sword (for once I can take all the credit, usually other people are involved in some parts), though as usual the design came from a .. designer. The movie posters I have seen look really good, and the weapons, armour and shields all look their best. I don't think the images I have seen of Caspian's sword have been manipulated much, if at all.
The Telmarine family of swords (of which Caspian's is one) are not made to 'be' historic designs, more they were built around the intention of being long cut and thrust sword suitable for use from horseback. The other Telmarine lords, and Miraz, all have swords with similar blade profiles.
Oh, I also did most of the work on the sword Cate Blanchett is carrying. Looking forward to seeing better photos, it is a sweet little lady's sword (along with the other ones in IJ4).

True! The Conqueror was filmed in the US South West, mostly in New Mexico, near where the early Nuke tests had been conducted. IIRC almost everyone who worked on the film died of some sort of cancer....
Except Howard Hughes, the producer. I think it was the last movie he produced, though... he lost a lot of money on it...

At the risk of being accused of getting off topic here for a moment; Didn't The Duke also live nearby ? I seem to recall that his ranch ' Durango' where many of his western films were shot , was also in the vicinity??

The Conqueror was actually shot near St. George, Utah, near the southwestern corner of the state. St George looks about 150 miles due east of the Nevada Test Site. Here is an image of the film poster with the Duke as GK, and the very non-Tartar looking Susan Hayward playing the object of GK's desire. BTW, Susan Hayward died in 1975, also of cancer.

"Okay?" I thought the last time I read the site rules they were "encouraged!"
Just kidding. Anyway, I'm also dead curious about Cate Blanchett's rapier. Maybe I'll go to the movie's site next and send an e-mail to the contact address demanding more pictures of the sword.

No disrespect to Cate Blanchet but she has a long way to go to catch up to Maureen O'Hara in the female swashbuckling dept. In fact I doubt there will ever be another female star to do as much as she did.

There's a good scene atop the bonnets of two side-by-side trucks with Shia LeBeouf and Cate Blanchett scrapping it out with a couple of those rapiers. LeBeouf, who I couldn't find a picture of, does quite well.

Ah, so you work for Weta? In that case, allow me to extent a metaphorical handshake by saying that I'm a rather great admirer of you guys and the work you do. You've served as an invaluable inspiration and example, and I hope you continued doing an outstanding job in the future.
As for the poster, it's good to know it hasn't been changed, and it's interesting to hear your thoughts behind the design. I'm now looking forward to seeing that movie more then ever.

I had the non-pleasure to view the beginning of that awful movie once...late night on cable...and decided that sleep was preferable to viewing it. Short opinion...he really wasn't a very good actor and Vikings with Texas accents don't work. ;-)

Altriste (viggo mortenson) fighting sword and dagger. I just saw this dvd yesterday. Excellent movie!!!! I give it my highest reccomendation!!! Best historical adventure film since the 70's versions of the Musketeer movies!!! Everyone get a copy!!!
He weild s a very interesting 6 inch leaf bladed knife that I enjoyed checking out with the "freeze frame" on my dvd player. Super-cool
