Hello there

I'm just about finished with refurbishing my beloved old hand-and-a-half sword (new crossguard handle and pommel) and now I also need a new sheath for it. Currently it has a simple leather sheath which works ok but i really would like a wooden-cored one, barring that i still would have to make a new leather one as the crossguard doesnt really fit the old scabbard making it all look a bit wonky.

My question is would a scabbard (leather or wood-cored) with a suspension system somewhat like the albion one (I also saw the same suspension system on the excelent drawing somewhere on the site but I cant find it at the moment Blush ) be apropriate for a sword used sometime around 1361?

I think I saw somewhere that it's taken from a period piece possibly the maciejowski bible but thats a bit earlier.

Hope you can help me

Pics of the finished sword soon to follow Razz

Thanks mr Thibodeau that was exactly the drawing I was referring to but couldnt locate.

How about the time, would this sort of scabbard be appropriate around 1361 A.D. ?

I'm not an expert as far as time period of scabbards but this type I think is earlier 1050 A.D. to 1250 A.D. ? But I could be wrong ? Also some patterns may have persisted in backwater regions longer than we might know about.

Poor or isolated regions still using out of fashion gear longer than the more populated regions of Europe.

I'm sure others here will correct any mistakes I have made above. Wink Cool

Could you post a pic of the sword....sometimes that helps in determining what might be appropriate.
Thanks,
Dan

Okay here are some pictures of the sword, the scabbard is just leather wrapped around and sewn on the back. the angle also makes the whole thing seem a bit wonky but it's more or less straight Wink

Here you can see the scabbard not quitte fitting the crossguard
