Having just recived a fine set of ' jack chains' from Patrick Thaden

I'm pondering how to attach them a jack. Clearly they should be attached with points as shown in various period images and I'm going to try points of both linnen and hemp to find out which works best. But how were the points themselves attached? I doubt that eyekets were made in 10, 20 or even 30 layers of linnen cloth or through a thick layer of raw cotton. Were the points simply sewn onto the Jack at the best spots?

Cheers
Daniel

I don't know if this is the period solution or not but I attach points to my gambeson by cutting out a disc of leather around 1.5-2" in diameter and punching two holes in it for the point to pass through. I wet-mold the "tunnel" between the two holes a bit with a chopstick so I can pass a point through and then stitch it to my gambeson around the circumference.

They're strong and have the advantage of easy replacement of broken points.

The eyelets in my jack are through 12 layers. I am making one for a guy in my group who has the same chains and I plan to add eyelets to his and he has 25 layers.
