All, once again I am coming to the forum on the off chance some one has some books they have encountered that are worth looking into. I am interested in finding books on Medieval history recreated. Here are some caveats: I know about Osprey, and their associated publications, as well as Roman Army, Vikings, and Medieval Military Costume all from Europa Militaria. I am specifically looking for early interpretation, from fall of Rome up to say the 1st or possibly 3rd Crusade with emphasis around 1066. (I should mention I also have the Heimdal publication on the battle of Hastings). I want books with excellent photos of re-enactors who strive for authenticity. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - books need not be in English, as long as the book is packed with good quality pictures.

Well, after looking about I did find a couple of nice history pieces that use alot of color photos of re-enactment gear and enthusiasts. Warrior by DK (they have 2 other books, Battle and Weapons) does a nice job of general history from Ancient Greece to Iraqi Freedom with copious color photos. However it is not specific enough for some one (like myself) interested only in the early Middle Ages. There is also Vital Guide Vikings, again a general history book on the Vikings, but with alot of re-enactment photos, though some are repeated from Europa Militaria. Still looking for that perfect early Medieval re-enactment book!

Not a book, but there are tons of photos to be found on sites like flickr from the Hastings reenactment as well as from Regia, the Vikings, the Household, etc....

Excellent idea! Thank you Robin, any other sites with good quality re-enactment photos would be great, but thanks so much for the Hastings site.

One of the books I just sold is great for this:

Barbarian Warriors: Saxons, Vikings, Normans (Brassey's History of Uniforms)

Thanks everyone for the sites. (I already have the Brassey book) I'm still cruising the web looking for sites as well, and will post them as I find ones I think are well done re-enactment with a high degree of authenticity. I'd love to see any great pics of the Norman era!!!

For anyone interested in good quality re-enactment books, I recently purchased an excellent source: Braconnier, Julien & Philippe Ghisolfo & Yann Kervran FRENCH KNIGHT OF THE XIIITH CENTURY. It is also titled Life of a Knight 1171-1252 from Philip Augustus to Saint Louis. Follows a knight from birth to death. Outstanding color photos on every page. Nicely recreated battle scenes both in France and the Holy Land, with some Saracen re-enactors thrown in as well! All classes of society are represented as well as the noble class. Quite enjoyable. The book was originally to be published in French, but they did an English version. It is an oversized book, hard cover with every page containing color photos. It was a little pricey at $60 dollars, but may be cheaper now that the dollar is gaining on the Euro. The only place I found it in the USA was at www.onmilitarymatters.com Super book store specializing in military history and wargaming.

Thanks for the nice comments.
You should be able to find the book also from Historic Enterprises : http://www.historicenterprises.com
They plan to make soon a new website, introducing the book at the occasion, with one signed copy by the three authors to win.
