Hello all. I've just finished a wood core for a scabbard. This is my first attempt, and i was thinking of only partially wrapping it, leaving exposed wood through the midsection of the scabbard. I was wondering, does anyone know if staining a scabbard is a bad idea? I've read cautions against certain woods and glues due to their acidity or tendency to breathe humidity, and having been careful in my selection so far, i don't want to use a stain that might be detrimental. I wasn't able to find any references with the search feature.

I was thinking of using Cabot Australian timber oil. The scabbard is poplar. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I don't believe you will have any problems. I've stained several scabbards (one a memorable shade of green) and there have been no customer complaints.

I don't think staining would cause any problems. Checking the ingredents for chemicals known to corrode steel might be a good idea, although I've never had stained wood cause metal to rust.

In my experence with poplar, I've found that different parts of the wood tend to soak up more stain & oil than others. I'd advise using light coats over the whole surface until the desired color is reached. That should prevent on area from appearing darker or lighter than others.
