Askeaton Sword?
Hi there,

does any one have any information or pictorial references to a sword fround in Askeaton Ireland?

I found this link and was hoping for some background for a sword commission.

Many thanks

Jason
You can find pictures and informations about the sword which inspired this one on page 28 and 29 of Swords of the Viking Age (at least, I think it's the one).

Its classification is Petersen type A, Behmer type VIII. The original sword had two rings at the top and bottom of the grip.

Apparently it was found near Askeaton, in a river, around year 1848. The blade is still in relatively good condition.
Thanks Hugo,

Wow nice book, not very nice price :D

THanks for the link,

Cheers

It might be the sword on the left here (taken at the National Museum in Dublin):

Yes, I think it might be the one I was talking about. You can notice a couple of differences with the reproduction. The cross-guard on the original is tinner and wider, no grip rings on the repro, etc. But otherwise I like the sword made by ArmArt.
I had the pleasure to see it in person (unfortunately behind glass) this January. When I get the time to find my notes I'll try to post my estimates on hilt measurements if you want,
Dan
That is a lovely looking sword. Have you any idea of the backlog for ArmArt? I have a similar sword on order from Patrick Barta at TEMPL and am now 10 months into a 30 month waiting period. THey say that expectation is good, but I am not all that bloody patient.
Thanks Gents

I am one week into a commission from Patrick Barta - only 3 years to go !!!!!

I don't know what the backlog is at AmArt, The web site reads that the swords are in stock for immediate delivery.

Hugh, I would be happy to take your place in the queue at Templ

Cheers

Jason
Before purchasing anything from ArmArt, please search this and other internet forums for information on the company and its delivery history.

Thanks for the timely reminder, Chad. I now remember the problems that others have had with ArmArt in the past and that some seem to continue having, IIRC. But I also seem to remember that you apparently are ok if you order something that they have "In Stock." It is only when you commission something that the problem arises. If this is not so, please correct me.

Honestly, I don't have recent first-hand experience with either in-stock or custom commissions from them. I've heard second-hand that in-stock orders haven't suffered from the same problems as older custom orders, but I don't know many (if any) people who've been too willing to throw money at ArmArt after their past troubles.

Since they have a very public history of having taken money and not ever filled some orders, most folks are gun-shy. I would love it if someone would report that their quality is back up (it supposedly dropped when they tried to scramble to fill late orders; then they stopped delivering) and delivery times are as-quoted. But that involves someone (or some people) potentially risking their money...
