Theres a hard to find book in the book reading list here... http://www.myArmoury.com/books/item.php?ASIN=8322926243
titled... " Early Medieval Swords from Central and Eastern Europe : Dilemmas of an Archaeologist and a Student of Arms " by Lech Marek ( Not " Early Marek " as listed ! ) Amazon has it at $125 second hand but I have found an excellent source new. I just recieved mine and, although I havent read it yet, I am very happy with the book and it has excellent illustrations of some rare sword types. This book really fills some gaps between the "standard" viking and migration types and the "standard" early medieval types. Not that there really is any "standard" types, just that some are more common than others, but I find that the swords ( and armour too for that matter ) that are reproduced for sale seem to be of a rather narrow selection compared to the wide variety that was used historically.
The book has been translated from Polish and it is a good reminder to me just how much information resides in 'foreign' publications from places like Germany and Poland and other Eastern European countries. Alas, many of these have not been translated into English but in some cases they are profusely illustrated.
I paid just over AU $18 ( but the Buy-it-now price is AU $47 which is around US$40 ) for the book plus postage and I recieved it ( in Australia ) more quickly than some local deliveries !!
The seller .....Rafal Wiesiolek ,Szczyrk, default 43370 Poland ..... has an e-Bay store here... http://stores.ebay.com.au/POLSKA-National-Goods-From-Poland ...and he's a real gentleman and very professional. His store sells Polish militaria and you'll find the books section on a button on the left side of the page. He has one copy on his page currently but he has a supply and I am sure he can order others
His e-Bay trading name is "salmopol " This is via the Australia e-Bay, but you can find it on any e-Bay, and this is his e-Mail .. at klimczok@wp.pl
With the cost of books nowadays, this one is very well worth it !
Happy hunting and cheers !
