The World Invitational Joust, 2007

3 Internationals and 3 Americans compete in the first Competitive Jousting Event of its kind in the USA!

The World Invitational Joust is a competitive equestrian sporting event based on popular events which have been put on at the Royal Armouries, Leeds for the past 10 years. The object of competitive historical jousting is to score points by breaking lances on the shield of ones' opponent, rather than unhorsing him. Though unhorsings occasionally occur, they are not encouraged nor desirable.

We have 6 competitors participating in this event:

The host of the joust, Jeffrey Hedgecock realized a life long dream when he began competing in jousting events at the Royal Armouries 5 years ago. Since then, he has competed in events in New Zealand, England, Scotland and Holland. Jeff is a member of The Order of the Crescent, who won the Sword of Honour at the Royal Armouries team joust in April of 2007.

Dominic Sewell is a regular on the European jousting circuit, participating in shows and competitions across the length and breadth of the UK, Ireland and Europe. In 2006, Dominic led the Destrier team to victory, winning for the Sword of Honour at the Royal Armouries. This is Dominic's first joust in the US.

Jezz Smith is an accomplished multi disciplinary horseman and enthusiastic student of history. He is a founding member of the Company of the Lance. Jezz has competed in Australia several times, and in May he participated in his first European tournament in Belgium. This will be his first joust in the US.

Belgian police instructor Fred Piraux entered his first competitive joust in 2003 at the Royal Armouries in Leeds and has been breaking lances ever since. In addition to teaching international jousting workshops, Fred manages his own troupe "the Hackamores" and in 2004 was one of the founding members of the Euro Jousting League. To promote the EJL, he has carried the banner of Liege around the world, jousting in more than 10 countries.

Born in San Antonio among the ranches and open spaces of Texas, Henry Thomas has been riding since he was very young. A long abiding fascination with the middle ages led him to reenactment, then medieval equestrian pursuits. An enthusiastic student of jousting, Henry will put his training to the test in his first competition.

4th generation farrier Michael Pettijohn has been around horses all his life. He started riding as soon as he could sit up, as his mother's idea of babysitting was to sit him in the saddle in front of her as she rode. A lifetime of equestrian activities ranging from rodeo, cowboy, ranch work and packing in the Sierra Nevadas has given him a solid grounding in the horsemanship skills that allow him to realize his life's dream of being a knight. A natural with deadly accurate lance handling abilities and uncanny riding skills, Mike just may prove himself to be the man to beat in this, his first joust.

We are pleased to announce that the
Frazier International History Museum (formerly the Frazier Historical Arms Museum) in Louisville will be sending two interpreters (and their armours and weapons) to our event.

Barrett Cooper is the Head of Interpretation and will act as Master of Ceremonies for the joust, providing colour and commentary from the field:

Program Specialist Tony Dingman will work together with Barrett, providing colour and commentary from the booth:

In the interval between jousts they will be doing sword and pollaxe demonstrations, as well as the commentary for the skill at arms display.

Along with jousting we will have something for everyone- mounted skill at arms and swordsmanship displays, exhibitors such as Operation Greyhound, a breeder of Gypsy Cobs, lure coursing, music, food and games.

Date: October 27, 2007
Place: Poway Valley Riders Accociation
What: 6 jousters, 4 countries, 1 victor. History will be made.
Don't miss it.

Presented by Historic Enterprises, Inc. This is an independent event which is not affiliated with any other group, association or society.

We believe the 8 harnesses of high quality reproduction mid-late 15th C. armour at this event will be the greatest number in use in one place at one time in the US.
