Hey folks,
I'm looking for books with lots of examples of clamshell hangers, any ideas? Any online resources out there?
Cheers,
Alex

The cheapest is Swords and Blades of the American Revolution. The most expensive is Mazansky's British Basket Hilted Swords. Prices for these are much higher than they were just last year. You really need both if you want to pursue the subject in serious detail, although the proto-mortuary swords get relatively little attention from Mazansky and they may not be what you have in mind anyway. I'd say get Swords and Blades first because it has multiple views of each hilt, shows blades, gives vital stats and covers lots of other weapons. Mazansky is more academic and his photos show much greater hilt detail, but he offers no useful statistics and (much worse) doesn't show blades or even simply describe the kindsof blade mounted with a given hilt.
FWIW, I'm currently making a proto-mortuary hilt, and I'm consulting both books extensively.

Cheers Sean. Just received a copy of Swords and Blades and there's tons of great info & examples in it.
Does anyone have the first volume of Boarders Away*? Does it have many examples of clamshell hangers?

What type of Clamshell Hanger are you talking about....are you referring to the later hunting hanger with a small clamshell projecting over the blade or the earlier cutlass/hanger with a large clamshell guard(s) quillons, etc?
Knowing that will help me look through Boarders Away and find the kind you want.
Thanks,
Dan
