I recently acquired a wonderful old horseman baskethilt, circa 1750's, via an Ebay auction !
The seller, who resides in Ireland, picked up the piece via an old estate sale in West Chester, PA. last summer, along with several other cool swords (one of which also sold on Ebay, recently !)
For the very decent price of $1,400.00 I was able to add this nice old war horse(man) to my collection ....
The sword, although far from pristine, has a heck of alot of character to it, and gives off that certain attitude vibe of ... "I've been around a good long while, laddie, and I've seen my share of s*#! , so don't ye mess with me, now" ... Yup, right down to its re-ground tip !

Slàinte, Mac
Weight - 3 lbs. 2 3/4 oz., OL - 35 7/8", BL - 29 13/16"(cut down), BW - 1 3/8", BT - 7/16"(nearest hilt), Grip length - 4 1/2" (including turks head), Pommel diameter - 1 1/2"(approx.), Basket width - 4" , Basket length - 4 1/2", Basket height - 4 1/2", Ring - 3 1/2" x 2" (inner diameter).

The gentleman who sold this to me , Hugh Butterfield, wrote the following :

I used my wifes ebay account to sell this sword. I just saw your email and noticed the myArmoury domain.

Actually there is said to be something like that at the Castle of Skokloster in Uppland, Sweden. But you better ask Joachim or Peter for the details.

I see the sword is single edged so you just need to reshape the tip and lengthen the handle somewhat and you have a baskethilted katana.
It looks quite thick at the base that sword.

Hey, Dave ....
It's possible, ? , as the overall quality of the piece in keeping with many examples of SH's work !
I'm convinced the Allan's didn't sign all their work either, as too many fine examples have their name written all over them despite the lack of signature, etc! So ya never know !

Hey Mac, I just noticed something in that last pic that has me curious. It appears to have an interrupted fulled close to the ricasso. Is this just the lighting? If not is this a common feature?

Are you referring to the shallow grooves carved nearest the hilt, or further out ? Mac
