This listing is marked SOLD and is no longer available
Folks,
I’m selling a World War II-era Japanese cavalry trooper’s saber collected in Burma in the 1980s. It has suffered moderate damage from spending the past eight decades in tropical and semi-tropical environments (it went to Savannah, Georgia from Burma).
The blade of this example is in good condition, and has not suffered from rust, although there is scattered black staining along the blade. The steel guard and grip backstrap are slightly roughened by old rust, but intact with all detail preserved and without active rust. The composite or polymer grip cover has two chips which expose the wooden grip core, but is otherwise in good condition. The leather finger-loop has broken and is mostly missing from its nut inside the guard, although traces remain under the nut. The grip and guard are tight and solid. The steel scabbard is rusty overall but solid and stable; the worst rusting is on the hanging ring, which is visibly thinned and looks delicate.
I seem to have reached my upload limit for today, so photos will follow later, but not before Friday. Higher-resolution photos than I can post here are also available on request.
I'm asking $425 shipped in the U.S.A.; foreign buyers will have to discuss shipping. I accept PayPal (for Goods and Services, please add 3% to cover the fee) or check or money order. Sorry, no trades. Please send me a PM if you're interested.

It appears I can't post photos as I've reached the total upload limit for a user at one time. Please contact me by PM if you'd like to see photos, and I'll be happy to send them to you.
I notice that there's also an earlier-model Japanese cavalry saber posted here; buy them both, and start a time-line!
And because I'm a bit compulsive, let me note that Burma is now Myanmar.

Folks,
Thanks to Jordan E. Williams' posting of a similar sword, I now know that this is definitely a cavalry NCO's Type 32 saber; it has the longer blade of the Kō pattern (32.75", or 83.2 cm), which was designed specifically for mounted soldiers. The pattern didn't vary as much as the slightly shorter Otsu (which Mr. Williams is selling, and which was made for other branches of the Imperial Japanese Army), but remained consistent from 1899 until the end of World War II.
Best,
