Mercenary's Tailor Viking Shield

Original: Dark Ages through the early Crusades

This shield represents a type that saw widespread use throughout the Anglo Saxon and Viking periods. The shield board is made from a piece of Red Oak plywood that had been covered with 6 oz. leather on the front face and felted wool on the back face. The shield's rim has been edged with reinforcing rawhide and steel retaining clips and is capped off by a raised boss that has been padded in its interior. The back face of the shield is also mounted with an adjustable leather carry strap.
