Lutel Early Pattern Axe (#20004)

This Axe represents an early pattern from central Europe dated from the early 14th to 15th centuries.

Overall length: 30.75"
Weight: 2.6 pounds
Blade length: 9.5" as measured across the curve
Head width: 6.75" from socket to edge

The head of this axe has been left in a rough, hot-worked, condition. This provides the piece with a bit of a rustic Dark Ages look that is actually somewhat attractive. The blade is secured to the socket by three pins that run through the assembly and are hammered into place. The blade is also welded to the socket. The welds are cleanly done and unobtrusive.

I doubt if this pinning technique is historically accurate, however, it does impart visual detail to the piece and seems to be secure. The head had been secured to the haft by means of a wedge driven down into the haft as seen in modern axes. The haft is crisscrossed with a leather thong that is held in place by brass nails. This also lends visual detail to an otherwise simple piece.
