Blacksword Armoury "Swiss Axe"
Original: Loosely based on western European originals, circa late 14th-late 15th centuries

This axe is loosely based upon sidearms of the late 14th to the late 15th centuries. During this period, armour reached its perfection. As a result, the soldier's sidearm needed to have the capability to penetrate the plates of or pierce the gaps in this armour. During this period, one could often find small one-handed axes with a stout blade and a sturdy back-spike designed to dispatch a fallen but well-armoured foe.

This reproduction by Blacksword Armoury takes the late medieval soldiers axe and greatly exaggerates its every proportion. It sports a heavy, oversized crescentic blade, and an enormous quadrangular back-spike. The owner has re-hafted the item with a hickory replacement handle to better suit the weapon's weight and proportion. This weapon has the look of a fantasy axe based very loosely on much smaller historical pieces.
