Tod's Stuff Dagger of Alexander Balliol
Original: English/Scottish, circa 1280
This dagger is based on a piece located in a private collection dated to the late 13th century. The heraldry on the pommel, blazoned as
argent,
an orle gules (on a silver or white background, the outline of a shield in red) is linked to Alexander Balliol, Lord of Cavers and Chamberlain of Scotland. Alexander was cousin to King John I of Scotland.
This dagger features a steel pommel, guard, and thick fullered blade. The pommel bears a silver shield, enameled with a red orle. The grip is of boxwood, treated with linseed oil and is pierced with five handmade tubular copper rivets. The scabbard is made of two layers of leather, dyed black, with a steel chape. It is decorated with a center section in imitation of the blade's fuller.
