Kirby Wise/Art Elwell Sgian Achles
Original: Scotland, mid-18th century
This utility knife has a steel blade, mounted in elk antler and brass. The tang of the knife is secured with a counter-sunk nut and epoxy inside. That assembly is covered by a brass plate that is riveted to the antler grip. The blade is fullered on both sides and has scalloping on the back edge.
Kirby Wise forged the blade, which was hilted by Art Elwell. Art also made the wool-lined, leather-covered scabbard with brass mounts. A clip is found on the scabbard's throat, allowing it to attach onto a belt.
