Hi,

I am looking for a bit of help. I have somewhere a picture of a knife that I think is commonly called the 'Ave Maria knife', though I could be mistaken; unfortunately I can't find it.

Does anyone out there recognise this description and can they point me to a picture of it? This is from memory a few years back so some of the detail may be wrong, but it is something like this. It is a medium sized 15thC European eating knife in fairly good condition, the handle scales are ivory and there is a wire dot inscription and pattern of floral design and the words Ave Maria on the scales, otherwise it is a fairly unremarkable knife.

Any leads would be welcome

Tod

I think you will find it in the "Knife and Scabbards" from the museum of london collection.

I would have to check but I am fairly it is in it.

Knives and Scabbards, HMSO, p. 29 & 31 & 96-97.

In addition, Jeff Hedgecock at Historic Enterprises made a beautiful copy of this for the head of the Belle Compagnie a while ago, but unfortunately he doesn't show it on his web page any longer.

Hugh

Thanks for the mention, Hugh.

I'll post a pic in a day or two when I return from England.
