A customer has commissioned a schiavona hilt fitted with a short rapier/spadroon style blade, which I am in the process of putting together with the help of the excellent resources on this site.

The blade is flattened diamond section, roughly 35 inches long and an inch wide at the ricasso, tapering to a point in the last third of the length. For the sake of proportion, I'd prefer a broader blade, but that was what was requested.

Nathan's schiavona feature mentions a variety of blade types, but I was curious about the lightest sort of blade that would be fitted to a schiavona hilt. Does anyone know of examples of a configuration like the one I'm working on?

Cheers

I'm heading out the door so I've got to make this quick for now. When speaking of narrow-bladed schiavona, the one that always jumps into mind is this:

This looks to be of hexagonal cross-section, but may be a fullered diamond section with its details washed out (by over-polishing, perhaps).

I will try to collect other examples as I find the time.

What type of hilt are you going to be making?

It's a bit of a mutant really, but I suppose its a Type 2, customised for a large hand and a light blade. There are only two rows of pierced work at the top of the basket (which was quite enough - I'm not lazy, but there are limits to my patience and I don't have apprentices to impose the repetitive filing on). Using 2.5 mm sheet added to a forged knucklebow/quillon. I know from experiment and experience that 2mm would be too thin and 3mm too heavy.

Thanks for the picture. My blade is a bit more slender, but I won't have to adjust the basket now. I was looking at some more pictures and thinking some parts of my project were sitting incorrectly in relation to the quillon, but this one tells me I'm within range. (Phew!)

I'll post some pics when I've finished.

Cheers
