I recently bought an axe and war hammer head from Albion's moat. Does anyone know what time period and/or region these designs were commonly used in?
Thanks... Alex |
The axe head is reminiscent of 13th century Haldebrian (sp?) axe found in Ireland but believed to have been carried by Scottish soldiers (or at least made in Scotland). There are drawings of the originals in David Nicolle's "Arms and Armor of the Crusading Period". Albion also used to sell a closer rendition of these axes with the patterned work on the sides. I have one of those.
For the hammer I cannot say much.

Alexi,
Could this style of axe have seen service in the holy land during the crusades?
