I'm new to this forum, hope the question hasn't been made already, however I didn't find it in search.
I have just bought a norman style helmet, I need to make a liner and chinstrap.
Question one:
what would be an historically corect liner? I mean, I'm a modern helmets collector, so I would know how to fit in a german style leather assembly, however I strive for autenticity, I do not like to mingle the kaiser army with the middle age.
I have read of horsehair padding cushions, or of big leather stripes.
Please notice that I'm going to use it with both the sole arming cap or with arming cap & coif.
Question two:
no visual reference I know of shows the use of chinstraps.
Are modern reproduction helmets' chinstrap an arbitrary fitting or what?
