Jan Skrzetuski of the Jastrzębiec coat of arms - one of the main characters in Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel "With Fire and Sword", modeled on the historical figure of Mikołaj Skrzetuski, after whom the novel's hero received his name and the "zbaraski episode".
Mikołaj Skrzetuski came from a noble family from Rożnów near Poznań, using the Jastrzębiec coat of arms.
Mikołaj Skrzetuski inherited part of the village of Rożnów near Oborniki from his father, but he gave it to his sister, Marianna Poniatowska, and as a nobleman joined the army with his relatives.
The first mention of Skrzetuski, dated November 30, 1634, comes from Lviv town records. This mention suggests that he enlisted in the army through his relatives from the Bełz Voivodship. His relatives lived near Bełz, a small town between Lwów and Zamość.
He led an itinerant lifestyle, participated in wars, spent his free time with his sister in Wielkopolska, or with relatives near Bełz.
After the outbreak of the Khmelnytsky Uprising, he served in the armored regiment under the command of Captain Marek Gdeszyński, whose right-hand man he was. In 1649 he took part in the defense of Zbarazh. After a dozen or so days, the defenders began to run out of food and drinking water (the Cossacks threw the corpses of the dead into the water). The defenders had no illusions about the possibility of a long defense and therefore decided to inform the king of their situation and ask for help. Several people were sent to deliver letters written in French and sewn into the clothes to the king. They were captured, one of them was beheaded, the other had his eyes gouged out and his hands cut off. Despite this, Skrzetuski volunteered and, disguised as a peasant, got out of the besieged Zbaraż. The date of leaving the camp, as well as the route he traveled, are unknown. Skrzetuski had to travel about 46 kilometers before he got to the King. On August 7, he reached King Jan Kazimierz. Skrzetuski accomplished this act thanks to his experience, physical condition, knowledge of Ruthenian language and Cossack customs. He informed the king that the defenders would only have enough food for six days.
In 1651 Skrzetuski fought at Beresteczko. On May 29, a month before the battle, he was sent to scout and captured five Cossacks who testified that Chmielnicki had been in Złoczów the previous day. Then there was no news about Skrzetuski for eight years. Wiesław Majewski supposes that in the years 1652–1657 he “served as a cavalry lieutenant in the wars with the Cossacks, Tatars, Moscow and the Swedes.
The next mention comes from 1660, when Czarniecki's division returned from a victorious overseas expedition, during which a Danish ally was supported.
In the first half of May 1660, during the Polish-Russian war, he was sent with a raid against Chowański. Near the village of Kozierady, he captured the enemy banner and prisoners. Skrzetuski defeated the Russian unit near Piaski, and on May 17, in Wołkowysk, the banner of the Belarusian nobility.
Certainly, as an active soldier, he used a combat saber - a hussar saber.
