I am after information about the mouth and chape fittings appropriate to the sheaths for a 1740s or earlier Scottish basket hilt broadsword and dirk. I have a couple of specific questions.

Modern setup is for the mouth to retain in the frog/belt with a button - was this being done pre-1750 as well, or were clips used, or other arrangements?

Some 19th century bayonet sheaths etc thread a thin wire through the fittings and leather to hold them together. Was something similar (or different) done pre 1750? I don't trust just glue to hold the fittings on long term.

Any closeups of these would also be appreciated.

Still hammering away
