I think it is one of Ferdinand Hodler's pictures, which would make it late 19th century, maybe very early 20th. If not him, someone else in a similar style and period.

Hi Luka,
I have a note that it is a portrait of Adam Naf , a Swiss hero, c.1550, but not who painted it or when. So if you can identify the painter it could well be 19th century.
By the way, Luka, I finally finished and published my book on the Two-handed Sword!

I'm almost done reading it, I meant to email you, I have some questions again. That book is gonna make me spend more money.

Thanks for the lead Neil. The swordsman is indeed Adam Näf, hero of the Battle of Kappel 1531 (you can see the monastery at Kappel am Albis behind him). The picture is in the Näfenhaus in said village, which became his family home after the battle. The sword he is holding is in the Swiss National Museum. Näf was a standard guard - when the Zurich army was forced to retreat, the standard bearer fell in the river and drowned. Another man saved the colour but then was set on by the enemy. Näf came to the rescue, saving the colour (which is also in the national museum). Unfortunately, I still can't nail the painter or exact date.
