Hi All,
James Taylor and I are still working on the creation of a
new Highland unit for reenactments in American War
of Independence events, the 76th MacDonald Highlanders.
We're painstakingly trying to create as highly accurate a
portrayal as we can, and it's been hard finding period
references for some of our kit's parts. One of those
items are sword baldrics used by the OR's (Other
Ranks/Enlisted).
There are a fair number of officer portrayals showing
the baldrics, including the engraved regimental
hardware, but next to nothing for the OR's.
Right now our portrayal is waffling between using
converted sword baldrics to carry our bayonets,
or a sliding frog/shoulder belt arrangement. It's
hard to decide to go ahead with baldrics without
any decent images.
My own thoughts arethat the OR's had hardware similar
to the officers, just plainer, with no to little engraving.
I know George Neumann shows some stuff in his
book, but I was hoping someone out there might
have more info or period images they could pass
along.
If any one can help we all would be most gratefully
appreciative.
Sincerely,
Alex
