The impetus behind the bill, if I recall correctly, was to allow for the carry of the "State Knife" - the Bowie, if you were wondering.

Hot damn! My old Bowies haven't seen daylight in a long time! I don't really see a *need* to carry a large knife, much less a sword, in public. But, as a Texan, I find it an honor for my state to legalize a piece of our heritage. About time. I doubt I will ever be seen with a Bowie in public, but it will be nice to know I won't get ARRESTED for it!  ....McM
