Hi all ^^ Happy

I think that we have watched this plate armor.
I want to know the meaning of these words written on a breast plate.

I?SUS NAZAR?NUS, R?X I?DAE?RUM (I can't write Latin word WTF?! )
IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM

Of course, I understood the meaning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus,_King_of_the_Jews

ummmm... it is difficult for me... to write in English... Sad Cry Sad
* Why are these words written? Question
* What kind of meaning does this letter have? (for example "rich" or "authority") Question

In the first place... this armor is for parades or battles? Exclamation Question Laughing Out Loud

thanks ^^

I'm interested in Medieval Arms and Armor.
But... My English is very poor ><;

This appears to be a field harness (it would be used in battle).

As I understand Christian belief in this time period, the inscription is both a declaration of the wearers' Christian faith and a plea for God's protection in battle.

'I saw young Harry, -with his bevor on,
His cuisses on his thighs, gallantly arm'd,-
Rise from the ground like feather'd Mercury,
And vaulted with such ease into his seat,
As if an angel dropp'd down from the clouds,
To turn and wind a fiery Pegasus,
And witch the world with noble horsemanship.'

It is the extended version of the "INRI" signage udually seen on the cross above Jesus...basically means - Jesus the Nazarene King of the Jews or Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews.

It is said that Pontius Pilate had it placed there to mock the belief that Jesus was the Messiah and savior of the Jews/mankind.It became a sign of one's Christian faith.

The previous responses have adressed your questions well, but I have a bit more information about the religious themes in the etching on this armour (A22, in the Wallace collection), if you are interested.

The cuirass, c.1510, is etched with a crowned "W" to indicate allegiance to Wladislas, King of Bohemia. A hand, issuing from a cloud, points to the monogram, which was a conventional means of indicating divine favour and a right to rule. In a ribbon below the monogram are letters which can be read D.I.D.M.E., or G.I.G.M.E. In the later case, the inscription is thought to be a religious invocation, which could be something like "Gott ist Gewisslich Mein Erloeser" which means "God is surely my redeemer." The inscriptions indicate the wearer's temporal and spiritual allegiances, but they also lend him authority by emphasizing the divine right of his king.

If you go to the Wallace Collection website and contact the curator, Dr Toby Capwell, he will no doubt furnish you with all the information you need. He sometimes posts on here too so might spot this.

To amend slightly what Phil D said: the 'titulus' on Jesus' cross (INRI) was not to mock Jesus' claim but to make clear to everyone the crime for which the criminal had been convicted, in this case claiming to be King of the Jews which was an offence against Roman authority. This was done with all crucifixions.

I'm interested in having a reproduction suit of this made for myself, as I absolutely love this armour and got myself 3 estimations from various European armour makers....... However funds are lacking at the minute.

The main point of this post : I have e-mailed Toby Capwell twice just for some information on this armour, and he does not acknowlege receipt of an e-mail and neither does he answer............... :-(

I'm not exactly impressed......

Just to add I think the etching on this armour is impressive............

Have you tried reaching out to Toby Capwell through Matt Easton? They seem to be hanging out together a lot lately.

Actually, Pilate's interview of Jesus found no guilt of a capital offense, and he said so, trying several times to free Jesus with nothing more than a beating. However, the Sadducees wanted Jesus to be executed (but had no such authority) and threatened insurrection. As a result, Pilate flogged and crucified Jesus to placate the Jews. To gibe the Sadducees for forcing his hand, Pilate wrote Jesus' "crime" on the titulus he placed on the cross. It stated in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin "Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews". The Sadducees were upset at this inscription since in Hebrew, the first letter of each word made the Tetragrammaton "YHWH", the name of God. So, Pilate was telling the world that Jesus was GOD as an insult to the Jews, who were scandalized and demanded that it be changed to read "I am King of the Jews"; a demand that Pilate rejected.

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." - The Lord Jesus Christ, from The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, chapter x, verse 34, Authorized Version of 1611
