Hey everyone! I have been following discussion threads here for a couple years now, and I final decided to join club. Although I am only 17, and don't have nearly as much experience as the vast majority of my fellow forumites, I am very interested in all things relating to historic arms and armor. Any way, on to the question.

I recently picked up a translation of "The Book of Contemplation", by Usama Ibn Munqidh, and so far It has been a very interesting read. Usama makes frequent references to the use of "quntariya" spears by both his fellow Muslims as well as crusading Europeans. I was wondering if anyone has more information concerning these weapons; in particular their length, weight, and general design as well as any surviving examples. Thanks in advance!

Hi Cole,

My knowledge on quntariya spears is limited, but from what I understand the name comes from the Byzantine kontarion. Just like the latter, quntariya spears seem to have been shorter and possibly heavier than the traditional Arab reed lances.

It really appears to be nothing more than a 12 to 15 foot heavy lance used by Parthian and Sassanian cavalrymen. Its organs are 1st century AD. The odd thing is it seams it was used two handed from horseback.
