Really, mainly helms. This comes from my own desire to make a helm for myself, but it is a skill I'd like to add to my collection... Problem is, I can't find any info/tutorials pictures on how to do this. Is there a decent source for this kind of information? I've searched the myArmoury forums for about 10 pages in but couldn't find any DIY projects for helms.

Along with a terrific forum, there is a pattern collection (which includes a couple helms) and an essay section which is indispensible.

Hi Sean,
I've made a few helms over the years and I've just started making a new Vendel helmet. What do you want to know? Tools needed? Basic techniques? Good books to read?

I can recomment the book "Techniques Of Medieval Armour Reproduction" by the (notorious) Brian R Price.

I know Brian isn't much liked in this forum for unpaid royalties to other authors he's published, I'm not going into any details or picking sides in any of that, for those who're curious it's explained at length in other threads on the forum.

This book is his own work though and it's a very good start not only for helmsmaking but also various other types of armour. Good photos and text showing tools needed, how they're used, how to plan and plot the work and things like that as well as lots of inspirational photos of finished pieces.

I'll second Johan's comments. With all the baggage that comes with the author of TOMAR (Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction), the book is a solid starting place for you. I frequently refer back to this book and keep it very handy in my workshop.
