What about SCA-style O-ring belts with only one ring (rather than two)? I know they're not medieval, but I've been wondering if their origins really lay with the SCA or if there were other 20th- or 19th-century predecessors.

But the example you provided was that of a double-ring belt, which is normally worn in a very different way (without knotting, just passing the belt back through the rings in such a fashion that it's pinched in place between the two rings).
