A few months ago I decided to get some Rus viking swords made. I have a fascination with them and I havent seen many reproductions made. I contacted Robert Moc about making one for me. He was very enthusiastic about making the sword I had chosen as it happened to be a sword he had always wanted to reproduce. It seemed a bit of good luck that he was so interested so I decided to go with it. The original is quite a complex thing with a hollow pommel and guard that each feature extensive inlay. The blade of the original is incomplete, we settled on one that would be pretty typical for a sword such as this according to Kirpichikov in his famous work on Russian weapons. I wanted a bronze inlayed cross potent on the blade as I had seen one on a similar blade and thought it would be a nice touch. I also wanted a nice scabbard with a chape inspired by a find in Novgorod. Robert gave me his timeframe and we got started. I have a photo of the original plus some of the early progress shots to post today. Any thoughts are welcome!

Tim your really gonna have to stop showing off all these beauties you've been adding to you'r collection, you'r making the rest of us sick with envy. Seriously though you are going to have to show us some group shots when you get this one, it's looking great so far, can't wait to see more.

what period rus? are you by any chance a varangian reenacor? or just a stay in novgorod rus.

New pics showing the hollow guard and pommel hot from the forge and the guard in place. Robert said it was quite difficult to make the hollow pieces. I am really looking forward to seeing how they affect handling...

Great choice as usual my friend - that blade looks just perfect (what is the length?) and the hilt has a beautiful, organic look to it. It looks as though it would be very comfortable and handy to wield. The game's afoot!

Tim owns the 11th century - one reason why I'm pushed to 12th/13th. Plus we had more crusades!

Great looking sword, have you got some pics of the fully completed sword?

Do you have some stats to provide as well, overall length, blade length, blade width, crossguard width, grip length, weight etc?

The pics on Roberts page are this sword. I am not at home right now so I can't get any stats for you. I think it is 38 inches overall with a 32 blade length. The grip is comfortable for me to wield hammer style so I'd say about 3.75 inches. It isn't very heavy for it's size but still packs a bite. Probably about 2.5 pounds. I can send some more detailed stats if you like...
