I need your help.
I am looking for helmets like this one on the photo below.
It is a sallet from late 15th century. It has earholes which are the most important to me.
I hope some of you would know examples from Germany, Austria, Scandinavia or nearest neighbourhood.

Perhaps Spain is too far away...but I know that we have at least two of them in the Alava Armoury Museum...

Thank you for this information. Do you have any picture of those helmets?
However, Spain, Italy etc are to far from areas I'm interested in.

I think it could be a sallet with drilled holes instead of big earholes itself.

The one in the catalogue it's very much like the one you posted, but with a smaller ridge, and no "nasal".

The two helmets that are believed to be related to Boabdil, the las Nasrid king of Granada (perhaps thats too exotic...) have both covered earholes, the one in the Armerķa Real de Madrid and the one at the MET.

All the helmets have what seems a rectangular earhole...

Earholes? More like spearholes if you ask me.

Jokes aside: Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm a bit curiuous about this detail, as a fellow who has never worn a sallet - how compromised is your hearing ability when wearing one without ear holes? Could the earholes be justified in aiding situational awareness?

You know, first thing I thought when I saw that picture... is a Barbute with the bottom cut off... Are you sure this is not a modefied Barbute?

Yes it does sort of look like a chopped up barbute to me also. Wink Question

I also assume that the rectangular slots where the ears should be would leave an opening for sound to pass unobstructed but I don't think that one would stick one's ears out of the slots and exposed: Sort of a great way to have one's external ears cut off rather easily. Wink Razz Laughing Out Loud

Although I don't wear my armour often as I mostly have it to collect I just now put on my very close fitting GDFB barbute while listening to the radio and I don't perceive any great loss of hearing volume: Not enough to justify the need for ear holes as far as I can tell.

The suspension and lining is quite thin leather on the sides near the ears and is one of those split panel suspensions.

A modern SCA version with thick foam padding might block hearing a great deal more. Wink Question

I think that the metal transmits vibration/sound almost as if it wasn't there as far as I can tell.

The sallet-inspired M1918 stahlhelm is known for both impairing hearing from the side and introducing echo from the front.

Since my barbute is in physical contact with my ears it's almost like putting a glass to a wall to snoop on the upstairs neighbors .... acts a bit like a stethoscope maybe ?

With the stahlhelm the sides act more to deflect the sound and the air space between the metal and ear acts like insolation. Wink Question
