What form of pommel would have accompanied this guard? Would it be a lobated type like a Z or something more like an AE? It's obviously late because of the Urnes style carving..so a Z or AE seems plausible...Maybe something like the Suontaka sword's pommel? What does everyone think and does anyone have pictures to back up their opinion? Attachment: 23.55 KB
Tim, I am thinking something lobated and organic looking like the unusual central/eastern european types shown in Lech Marek's book, e.g. the cover. -JD
I would say almost certainly a Wheeler type VI, especially considering that the guard was found in Wales. That guard does not really resemble either a Z or an AE much. Those types are more of Baltic/Scandinavian types anyway.
