Recently, I made this reproduction

of Medieval Bulgarian flail.
I decided to create it primarily , because I was disappointed to see how many visitors of our events do not know the difference between the mace and the flail. Although we (I mean, the Bulgarian re-enactors) forbade its use in the melee, I think this one will serve well, at least on educational purposes.

Here

you can see the original (top row, right) on which the reproduction is based on. It was made of bone and was found during excavations in the Castle of Druster (near the present-day town of Silistra) in Bulgaria. It's not dated quite precise, but somewhen during the years of the First Bulgarian Empire - VII-XI century.

The head of the reproduction

was made of steel, turned on a lathe. The shaft was made of ash.

Specifications:
Head - steel St45 (steel with 0.45% Carbon content)
Dimensions of the head - diameter 44 mm / 55 mm long
Mass of the head - 360 gr
Shaft - ash
Handle - hemp thread with leather wrap
Chain - steel

and he has to separate from it when he separates from his life"
