|
|
A few months ago, I decided to have new scabbards made for some of my Vince Evan's dirks. Vince's dirks are wonderful - as everyone here can attest - but although Vince is a dear friend, his scabbards are a bit, how shall I say it...prosaic. I wondered what could be achieved by mating Vince's works with the works of another master, Christian Fletcher. So, I sent Christian three of Vince's dirks and we discussed design, etc.
I just received notice from Christian that the work was finished and the scabbards on on the way. I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I have in lieu of the real things! Note that Christian reused all of Vince's metalwork on his scabbards so the throats and end pieces are also Vince's work. The belt straps are hidden beneith the scabbards.
Enjoy! and pardon me while I show these off to an appreciative audience!!

No surprise that Christian turned out some great scabbards! These are truly lovely!

They are not sheaths (implying a wooden core) but scabbards (implying leather only). I wanted to go for a slightly different approach!

Your implication wasn't clear, as your first post referred to the new items as scabbards and also referred to the original Vince Evans pieces as scabbards as well. Didn't they originally have a wooden core?
FWIW: the terms scabbard and sheath do not necessarily imply a solid core or not. Most people actually consider a "sheath" to be without a solid core and a scabbard to be one with a solid core.
On myArmoury.com, the term scabbard is most often used to refer to a solid-cored item.
Either way, I like them mounted without a solid core. Good stuff. It reminds of me a Vince Evans dirk I previously owned and sadly had to sell. It also did not have a wooden core and I quite liked it.
