This cutlass was made this summer and now lives in the hands of Legacy Forge and is for sale. This was a joint effort by John Mitchell and myself. John forged the blade blank on our 90 Lbs Ironkiss power hammer and then I ground, fullered, polished and etched it. The hilt and handle were made by John aswell.

Double Clamshell Cutlass




Here you can see the bold pattern. The smokey black area is the 1070 bar

Some stats:

The handle is Cocobola. The shape is ovate at the shoulder and round at the pommel.
The knucklebow is mild steel and was forged 100% to shape.
The pommel is our 8 sided faceted "ball" pommel.
The shell is polished mild steel and was hammered to shape.
The blade is made of 5 bars. 3 bars of 1095/15n20 at 29 layers with 2 solid bars of 1075 in between.
The blade features hand ground double fullers and a "not so" false edge. Meaning it is sharp.
The blade is sharp with an appleseed edge.

Great piece - I have a passion for naval weapons All it needs is a suitable rig.
How did you make the fullers - by hammer or by grinding?

Sometimes we hammer and others we grind. In this case I ground the fullers free hand on a sander.
