Hello, as the title says, I am looking for depictions in artwork of pollaxe/-hammers in the late 14th cent. I now of a few in late 14th. cent french battle depictions and I had a look at Wagners line drawings. Thirs I know of Fiore dei Liberis around 1415 treatise about the pollaxe. Is there anything more clear and detailed? All those pictures I am refering to are rather crude.

Thanks

Hi Felix,

I am no expert in pollaxes, but I took recently a picture of he Passionszyklus of the "Rothenburger Passion" (1494) at Rothenburg Reichsstadtmuseum. Theres one of the basic types of pollaxes depicted in the background. Perhaps it's of use to you... I can provide you with a larger picture if needed.

Best regads,

Thomas

An image from 1494 is a full 100 years later than what Felix is looking for. Happy

Yes, there are many examples in the 15th cent. But donīt know too many from the century earlier. But it looks like this is the same for other people?

Look into Yates Thompson 35. Here is folio 90v. It is dated to 1380-1392. I have one image of it that has a gent on a horse with a pole axe.

Hope that helps!

I know its earlier than you wanted, but the Holkham Picture Bible from circa 1320-1330 includes an image of a poleaxe. I'm not certain if the weapon depicted has an axe shaped head, or whether it's a hammer head more commonly found on "true" poleaxes.

The axe in question is in the upper of the two images, towards the centre at the very top of the picture.

Earlier is never a problem in this case. Because it shows the evolution.

In this case I would think it is an axe with a spike on top and back. But this still is a good addition. Thanks.

Thank you for alll the help, over the last week I discussed things with my trusted arms smitha nd finalized the order, mostly based on the Fiore hammer.

I have those drawings from the Wagner book (pic attacched) does anybody no the original paintings he has taken those from? Especially the first 7 drawings are given date to the 14 th cent.

I'm not sure what you're asking, as I also have that book and the source for each of the weapon illustrations are noted at the bottom of the page.

Yes, I know, but his drawings are just rough (in some cases very rough) interpretations of the real thing. So I would be happy to see the original paintings for comparison.
