Greetings,
it is quite a long time since i had the chance to post here.
As the topic notes, I am currently interested in reconstruction of Byzantine warrior of the Xth century. But of course, as the topic is immensly vast, because they drawn their army form the ranks of units-for-hire they were extremely variant.
My question is centered around the soldiers of the Constantinople itself. I mean the Greek officers, not the Varangian gurad or Calibanari.
Are Machairas still proper and in use? What are the styles of their helmets - do the kapalins, typical for the later, XIIth cetury Rus fit the style? What types of armament did they carry?
Do dalmatic is still worn as the casual suit? Did they use the Turkish- style gambesons?
I am asking mostly for references, but if you have any iconography fitting the topic, I would be more than glad to see it.
