Vince Evans ballock dagger - In-progress pics
Hey folks,
Vince is making a
ballock dagger for me, and sent these in-progress pics last night. I thought you folks might enjoy them.
The blade is 5160, the fittings will be nickel silver, and the grip is burled black ash. The blade is heat-treated, but hasn't been finished fully. The grip has been shaped, but is awaiting final sanding and
polishing.

Nice! That ash burl ought to look spectacular once buffed. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

Don,
I'm really looking forward to this, too. This summer is turning out to be great. I got to go to the Bladeshow, my Sovereign will be coming in, my Albion Baron is already here, and this dagger by Vince will really cap things off. :)
I can't wait to see the finished product.

Quite frankly, I'm green with envy on this one
Like I said, I've been wanting one of these for quite a while. A&A's Ballock knife combo with the awl and knife included is looking pretty good.

I've been looking for a good ballock dagger for years. This one more than fits the bill. It doesn't have the awl or by-knife like the A&A set. But I like the look of the wood better on the one Vince is making, and I've always wanted a silver-mounted ballock. Plus it's by Vince, and it's a custom piece for less than a production one. Win-win. :)

Beautiful piece there Chad!
I love the wood. Does Vince plan on silver mounts for the scabbard as well?
I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

You know, I'm not sure. I'd assume so. Vince emailed today, sent those pics, and told me the dagger was in the mail.
I'll know in a few days.

I emailed him out of curiousity. The scabbard is black leather over wood with nickel silver mounts.

The dagger has arrived! It's really quite stunning. The wood grip looks much livelier in person than it did in the pics. The burl is beautiful.
The blade is made from what looks like 1/2 inch stock (yes, I said 1/2 inch). In order to keep the edge nice and sharp, the two blade faces are hollow-ground. Even the blade spine is hollow-ground, kinda like a fuller in the spine.
The pommel cap is decorated with a starburst pattern and capped with a little round pommel nut.
The sheath is much more detailed than I expected. The polished nickel silver fittings are dagged and have a little incised line that runs all the way around, mirroring the edges.
I'll post pics as soon as I shoot them.
All in all, this dagger is much cooler than I expected, and I expected it to be cool. :) The hollow grind was a pleasant surprise, as was the detail on the pommel cap, and the detail on the scabbard. I got much more than my money's worth.
Vince, you're still under-charging for your work.
