Still, are you sure that it's not the museum (as opposed to whoever assembled the sword) that's mistaken?

Well, Hermann Historica is a respected seller of antiques and I assume their description is based in no small part on the experience of their staff. So that's a factor. Perhaps they've seen actual evidence of reassembly.
Also, there are numerous examples of similar swords (some with basically identical guards) that are oriented as we expect.
And, this sword post-dates the images I've found so far; I haven't seen any mid-16th century swords in art with this feature.
I guess I can't be sure that it was reassembled wrong, but there's more evidence in that direction than others.

Well, I could well be wrong. I'd love to find examples of these weird swords, as they're found in art enough times and from a span of time that makes me think there could be something to the design.

I seem to recall that I have seen some Swiss/Landsknecht basalard type hilted swords with guards sloping away from the blade. One similar is pictured under the Makers and Manufacturers forum right now. Wonder if he made it based on an existing example. While slight, the bend back to the hand is there nonetheless.
