Greetings all,

I've been reading the excellent amount of info on this site, and happily turn here for most initial research. However, i now have a specific question regarding Tudor Era tournaments.

I know, the Tudor era cover a large amount of time, and specifics under each reign will vary, but any information, hints, or outright clarifications will be most helpful.

Specifically, i have seen references to one on one duels (on foot) being fought over a low wall. It seems to be the same wall that would separate the two Jousters. I am wondering if this is just a continuation of the Joust should both participants be knocked from their horses, or a separate event altogether- or a complete modern fabrication?

Any info, links, citations and especially imags or plates are most welcome.

Thank you!

Cliff Brannon

Thank you,

Cliff Brannon

The foot combat you are thinking is combat at the barrier, and is not related to jousting but is a separate event. It is probably related to the duels that were fought between champions during some medieval sieges to relieve the boredom, where a barrier would be set up at or near the gate to prevent a surprise attack, but allow the combat to be viewed by all.

You should read "Tudor and Jacobean Tournaments" by Alan Young (Sheridan House, 1987).
