Sirs-What does anyone know about felt helmets and armour? I know the Spartans wore felt helmets as Thucydides, in his description of the Spartan disaster at Pylos remarks that the weapons carried by Athenian light auxillaries could cut the Spartan felt helmets.Thise were propably thracian or illyrian mercenaries, as these were hired in large numbers by Athens to protect the flanks of the hoplite line, and they originated the falcata,(called by Greeks a Kopis). I also know that the Romans wore flat topped felt caps under their helmets. I can't Remember the source just the mosaic. Finally, several Arab Historians of the Reconquista remark that the Spanish light calvary and foot wore felt armour.
