Can somebody tell me how you are supposed to tie a forked 11th century scabbard belt? Is it just a granny knot or is there a particular way to do it?

Cheers. Happy

Oakeshott writes in his "Archaeology of Weapons":
"A broad belt of leather or buckskin [...] was fixed round the scabbard about five or six inches below its mouth; this passed round the wearers body from right to left. A second short, broad flap of leather was fixed immediately below the mouth of the scabbard going in the opposite direction, across the front of the body from left to right. The free end of the belt was divided into two tails while the flap was provided with two slits. When the belt was girt round the hips, the two tails were drawn through the slits in the flap in front and tied in a knot."

Hope I could help
