I am looking to see if anyone has any more information on sword XIIIb.1 from the spotlight article? I do not currently have a copy of Records though I am actively looking, $149+ is just a little to much for me to swallow. I do not know if Records has any further information on this sword besides that it is currently in a private collection. If anyone with Records could give me more information i would be indebted to them as this is the blade I would like to model a custom XIIIb on. Any measurements would be great as well as other information.

The paperback version of Records can be had for ~$50-60.

I keep looking and not finding it. Ebay, Amazon, and Borders' web sites. Any suggestions and I would scoop one up in a minute at that price range Chad.

Try this from Bookfinder.com.
Of course, the Boydell paperbacks of this title have been known to fall apart. I've often toyed with the idea of taking paperback copies and having them rebound as hardcovers. Should be more durable than the paperbacks and will still be cheaper than the hard-to-find Boydell hardcovers...
I'll see if I can scan the entry of the sword you're looking for later today.

Dan, he's asking for XIII.1 as it appears in the article. The article's numbers aren't the same as Oakeshott's book, as the spotlight articles have samples that aren't found in Records.
This is the sword:
XIIIb.1 In a Private Collection, ex Peter Dale Ltd.
Found in Scandinavia, this sword remains in excellent condition and appears not to have been excavated. Oakeshott dates it circa 1250-80 and refers to it as "a perfect example of that rather rare subtype, XIIIb". A Roman (?) coin is inset into the recesses of each pommel face.

Here is the text from Records:

Condition: Excellent. Not excavated. There is a certain amount of pitting in the lower part of the blade and on the
cross, but little on the pommel. The grip may be original. On each side of the pommel, inset into the recess, is a ? Roman
copper coin. On the outside of the pommel (ii) a Maltese Cross has been incised right across the face of the inset coin.
This is a remarkably fine sword, a perfect example of that rather rare sub-type, XIIIb. There seem to be no marks on the
blade. I have not been able to see and handle this sword for myself, but I am told that it is fairly heavy, say 31bs, with the
point of balance about one-third of the way down from the hilt.
There is a very similar blade, unmounted, in a private collection in Norway, and a superb one in mint condition, also unmounted, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, with engraved arms upon it giving a sure attribution to Ottokar II, King of Bohemia, who died in 1258. |
