with horsebows do you NEED the thumb release or will they work just fine with finger tabs??

No.

You do not need the thumb ring. In fact nether Kassai oc Grozer use thumbrings. I myself own three different magyar bows (all bought from Grozer) and I use finger tabs. Of cource I've tried the thumb rings but they are really hard to use and realy don't fill any function if you don't fire lots of arrows fast in uncomfortable positions from a horse.

I strongly recommend Grozer bows.

Thumb rings allow a shorter bow with a steeper string angle that would cause finger pinch in a 3 fingered draw.
However, since most commercially available models don't have a super short string length, you should be fine using the Mediterranean draw.
Hope this helps,
Dan
