After the last thread regarding Jacobite-era swords with pedigrees, I wrote an offhand email to the Museum(s) of Scotland and received this very timely and courteous reply. I post it here for my fellow 'basket-heads.' That the question was even posed to David Caldwell is certainly the end for me of a search for Lord George's sword. Three-cheers, however, for a nice gentlemen who took of his time to research and answer my inquiry.

Dear Dr Osborne,

Thank you for your enquiry – I’m afraid that as far as we know, no such sword exists today. Nor are we aware of it, or any sword purported to *be* it, having being documented in the usual way (journals, catalogues etc). I couldn’t be sure myself, and so checked with our Keeper at the Chambers St HQ, David Caldwell (author of “Scottish Weapons and Fortifications” and more besides) and he confirms this.

Which is, needless to say, a great shame! But I hope this at least answers your question.

Best wishes,
