It's like pants on a cat--surprising but not impossible. Here, according to Hermann Historica, is an excavated messer with both replacement grip scales and the surviving original scales with what appears to be a cord-textured leather wrap.
SCHWERTER, DEGEN UND RAPIERE
Lot Nr.4716
A great German knife, circa 1520. Slightly curved single-edged blade with rectangular quillons set on edge. Rectangular (somewhat shortened) tang with replacement wooden grip scales (the originals with remnants of the leather grip cover are also present). A cleaned excavation discovery, preserved for its entire length, with marks of heavy corrosion. Length 105 cm.
