I was scrounging around the internet this morning, perusing for a scabbard. Some are expensive, and I wouldn't mind having one (makes carriage a lot easier). I'm also trying to get a barter skill for my local SCA shire when it occurred to me that I could probably MAKE my scabbard, and a whole lot of others to boot, which can secure me gorgets, garb, etc. There's just one small problem in all of this: I don't know where to find the patterns for the things. If anyone could help me out, I'm not looking to do this as a profession, just a craft, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Your best bet to get started is to search the forums first. There are quite a few people who've made scabbards and put notes on here. That should get you started enough to ask specific questions.
If you search for "scabbard" in message subjects only in the historical arms forum the results are pretty good.

One of the better posts I remember was from Aaron Schnatterly (now works at Albion.)

A beginner who can obtain some thin (1/2") strips of wood at the hardware store, a few common tools (jig saw, belt sander, some wood blocks for hand sanding and sanding paper) has a fair chance of making something at least useable for transport!
Absence of evidence is not necessarily evidence of absence!
