|
|
I am considering getting a flat ring riveted haubergon by Knight's Realm. I am interested in the later 15th century and the haubergon covers a good part of the body for one investment and is pretty compact for storage. The stainless steel would be really convenient for ease of maintenance. Can any one comment on the quality of their chainmail? How discernible is stainless steel from mild steel in chain mail? Thanks in advance, Brian

Go to the Chainmail Haubergeons and Mail Shirts page and scroll down. They have riveted round links and riveted flat links.

The wedge riveted in not a bad price but the flat riveted with round heads can be had from well know EBay dealers for much less; I could get a long-sleeved fat guy shirt of the same rings from Van Sussen for less than that.
The round wire stuff is the junk MRL use to sell and that can be had for next to nothing on EBay. It normally is a little more than butted and a bit less than the cheap flat riveted. This style of ring is period but the size is way off and the flattened part is huge and looks nothing like a historical link.
All these shirts come from the same shops in India and Pakistan; find the cheapest dealer for the style you want and buy it. Find it Armory has good prices www.finditarmory.com so do Van Sussen and Kings Lance on EBay.
Historic Enterprises and Get Dressed for Battle are selling maille made buy different shops and have better quality than the above mentioned dealers but at a higher price.
I own two Get Dressed for Battle shirts; one 15th c and one Roman and they are great. I bought one from Historic Enterprises when they sold GDFB shirts and one I got second hand from a guy who bought it direct from GDFB. Guys I know have the flat ring round rivet head shirts they got from Van Sussen on ebay or Find It Armory and they got good service and the shirts are decent.

Thanks for the advice. My interest with them was that that was the only riveted flat ring stainless I found in my brief search. Do you think stainless would be that noticeable? I am trying to avoid maintenance time; two small children are very effective at getting my attention!

Stainless is noticeable but it can be oil blackened. 100% leenseed oil and a grill is all you need.
Both of my shirts are mild and over time have only had minor rust after an event. I never do anything to remove it; the rust flakes off next time you wear it.
