I was hoping to stay out of this one but....

I've stood next to a guy in antique japanese armor. It's flat out not as protective as European armor. The breat plate is solid, but the limb protection is extreamly thin. It seems to be designed to stop draw cuts and little else. Also, the mail is used only as 'connecting' material, and can only loosely be considered a form of armor. European armor by comparicent, covered most of the body in plate, and the gaps were covered in mail of far higher quailty.
